Heel bulb lacerations are a common injury with horses especially ones that are
in a field with barbed wire. Heel bulb lacerations usually appear to be small in
nature and look simple so many horse owners do not seek veterinary attention.
In approximately 3 days after an injury to a heel bulb, proud flesh sets in and
makes healing of the area virtually impossible. The reason this particular area
on a horse will not heal is due to constant motion from the horse.
Heel bulb lacerations treated the same day are sutured and often placed in a
cast for two weeks. Horses do very well with this type of protocol.
The horse in the picture to the right will never look normal and will be
burdened with intermittent infections of this large mass without extensive
major surgery.

NEW!!
Now offering laser therapy to speed tendon healing!!
Laser Therapy used to speed wound healing!!
Less Post-operative swelling, faster healing
times, more correct healing.
Top picture of severe abdominal trauma deep
to several muscle layers
Middle picture immediately after closure,
laser used at this time
Bottom picture is from 5 days post-op, due to
location owner was unable to flush drains
and wound still looked wonderful!! Laser
therapy used again at drain removal time.
This area will normally have a large amount
of swelling at day 5 due to location (gravity
dependent) as well as pain from muscle
healing. The low level of pain and swelling
was amazing!
We will continue to post laser cases as we
are excited about this great new treatment
option!!
